DJ Maphorisa released on R4,000 bail after alleged assault

The DJ is accused of assaulting his rumoured girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo.
DJ Maphorisa has been released on bail following his court appearance on Monday. The 'Ba Straata' star is accused of assaulting his girlfriend.
According to several reports, Thuli Phongolo told police that they had an argument at the weekend when things turned ugly.
"On Sunday 2023/5/7 at about 12pm, I was at my place of residence with my boyfriend, Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, better known as DJ Maphorisa. I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig," the media personality said in a statement, according to the City Press.
She added that things turned violent.
"He held me, took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck."
DJ Maphorisa, whose real name is Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, was arrested on Sunday and spent the night in prison.
The 35-year-old is yet to comment on the claims. According to the City Press, Thuli has since withdrawn her statement made to the police.

Despite the former 'Generations: The Legacy' star reportedly withdrawing her complaint, Maphorisa's bail conditions state that he cannot communicate with her until the gender-based violence (GBV) charge is formally withdrawn.
Thuli and Maphorisa have reportedly been dating on and off for two years.
A source told the City Press that things have been rocky for a while.
"They had a fight in early December after accusations of infidelity. They had another fight last month but never got to the police station."
The case has been postponed until June 14.
