Demi Lovato opens up about telling her parents about her sexuality

Demi Lovato says it took her years to open up to her parents about her sexuality.
It has been almost three years since Demi Lovato announced that she forms part of the queer community.
The singer says it took her a while to open up to her parents.
"It took me until I was 25 to come out to my mom," she told Sirius XM in an interview.
The singer says that she identified as bisexual before learning later that she is actually "pansexual".
Demi says what made it difficult for her to open up was that her family is Christian and she couldn't open up until she was comfortable.
However, she says her music gave it away.
"One day I was about to go to a show and I was sitting on a plane and I was with my stepdad, who is basically my dad," she said in the interview.
'"I was like, 'Hey, I need to tell you something.' I was like, 'I like girls, too,' and he was like, 'Yeah, I know. You have Cool for the Summer out'."

Telling her mom came right before she could go on a date with a lady she was seeing at the time. Demi says she feared that the media might cover the date and she didn't want her mother to find out that way.
"I didn't know if I was going to be photographed or what and I really liked this girl and I was like, I think it's time to tell my mom in case it becomes serious," she said during the interview.
"So I sat my mom down and said, 'I need to talk to you,' and I said, 'I'm about to go on a date with a girl and I just wanted you to know and hear it from me that I do like girls too'."
To her surprise, her mom "just almost started crying" and told her, "I just want you to be happy".
She says she is grateful for the support she received from her parents.
"And to have that reaction from a parent is so valuable and so appreciated because there are so many parents that don’t respond that way and it breaks my heart," she added.
Demi also said she is an advocate for the queer community because she wants people to stop the stigma.
"That's why I post on social media all the time about being queer and what it means and things that are in the public eye, what's going on, current events. I post about it because it's really important to me and I want 15-year-old you to feel appreciated and valued," she said.
