'7de Laan' coming to an end after two decades

'This [show] really helped my Afrikaans in high school' - social media users react to the end of '7de Laan'.
SABC 2 and Danie Odendaal Productions have announced that they will be bidding farewell to local soapie '7de Laan' after 23 years.
The show's official Instagram page shared the news on its social media pages.
"Dear valued viewers and fans. With a heavy heart, we bring you the sad news of the SABC's decision to conclude the beloved soapie, '7de Laan'."
According to a statement released by the SABC, the show will not be recommissioned after for another season. The channel is currently airing season 24 of the soapie.
'7de Laan' aired its first episode on 4 April 2000. Viewers fell in love with characters such as Hilda van Zyl (Annelisa Weiland), Charmaine Meintjies (Vinette Ebrahim), Septimus 'Oubaas' van Zyl (Pierre Van Pletzen) and Vanessa Meintjies (Ingrid Paulus).

The show has also won multiple awards over the years, including several South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs).
The last episode of '7de Laan' will air on 26 December 2023.
"Over the years, 7de Laan has touched the lives of millions of South Africans, becoming an integral part of countless households. We deeply understand and appreciate the profound emotional connection and unwavering loyalty that you, our viewers, have developed towards the show, its endearing characters, and its enthralling storylines," the '7de Laan' team said in a statement.
It also thanked its loyal viewers for supporting the show over the years.
"As we approach this bittersweet conclusion, we encourage you to join us in cherishing the remaining episodes and relishing the memorable moments that have made this show such a cherished part of South African television. Your passion and enthusiasm have made this incredible journey possible, and we are eternally grateful for each and every one of you."

Social media users have expressed their disappointment in the show coming to an end. Some revealed that the show helped them with their Afrikaans in high school.
"Yoh. This really helped my Afrikaans in high school," one Twitter user wrote.
Another tweep added: "Afrikaans First Additional language just got a lot harder."
Many also said that '7de Laan' is the best Afrikaans language soapie on TV. "I hope you bring in another Afrikaans drama," one viewer pleaded.
