2023 VMAs: Taylor Swift makes history, Rema does Africa proud

The 'Princess of Pop' has done it again! Taylor Swift is unstoppable.
Taylor Swift made history at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) held on Tuesday, September 12, in Newark, New Jersey.
The 33-year-old won nine out of the 11 awards she was nominated for, including the coveted 'Video of the Year' award for 'Anti-Hero'. It is her fourth time winning the award. She is the only artist in history to achieve the feat.
Taylor beat Beyoncé, Doja Cat, KAROL G, Nicki Minaj, and Shakira in the 'Artist of the Year' category. Here's a look at the other seven awards she won:
- Song of the Year for 'Anti-Hero'
- Album of the Year for 'Midnights'
- Best Pop for 'Anti-Hero'
- Show of the Summer
- Best Direction for ''Anti-Hero'
- Best Cinematography for 'Anti-Hero'
- Best Visual Effects for 'Anti-Hero'

Taylor had a fangirl moment when she spotted the members of *NSYNC onstage. The group presented her with the 'Best Pop' award.
Justin Timberlake called Taylor "unstoppable", and it seems she is a big fan of the group as well.
"I had your dolls. Like, are you doing something? What's going to happen now? They're going to do something and I need to know what it is," she said.

Taylor's domination at the ceremony means she is now in second place on the VMA all-time winners list with a total of 23 awards.
Beyoncé is leading the board with 30 'Moonmen', including two with Destiny's Child and two with her husband Jay-Z for The Carters.

Other big winners on the night included Nigerian star Rema. He won a 'Moonman' in the 'Best Afrobeats' category for his song, 'Calm Down' featuring Selena Gomez.
South Africa's Musa Keys was also nominated in the category for his song with Davido, 'Unavailable'.
Ice Spice won the 'Best New Artist' award, Nicki Minaj won the 'Best Hip-Hop' award for 'Super Freaky Girl' while KAROL G, and Shakira won 'Best Collaboration for 'TQG'.

Best Art Direction: Doja Cat for 'Attention' (Art direction: Spencer Graves)
Best Choreography: Blackpink for 'Pink Venom' (Choreographers: Lee Jung (YGX), Taryn Cheng (YGX), Sienna Lalau and Kiel Tutin).

2023 VMAs performances
Some of the biggest stars in the music industry took to the stage to perform their latest hits.
Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Shakira, Doja Cat, Demi Lovato, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Grand Master Flash, and Doug E. Fresh were just some of the performers on the night.
Diddy, who won the 'Global Icon' award, brought out Keyshia Cole, Yung Miami, and his twin daughters, Jessie and D'Lila Combs, for his performance of 'I'll Be Missing You', 'Bad Boys For Life', and 'I Need A Girl'.
His son King Combs also joined him onstage.
