In addition, your body needs Vitamin C to form blood vessels, cartilage, muscle, and collagen in bones.

Vitamin C in winter

Many people consume Vitamin C in the winter season. This is because it helps to boost their immune system in a season where illnesses such as colds and flus are common.

"We all know that Vitamin C is an important vitamin in keeping the immune system strong," says dietitian Monique Piderit

She adds that it also helps protect "the body’s cells from damage and supporting the normal functioning of the skin".

You can get Vitamin C from supplements, but eating foods rich in Vitamin C is the best way to get it.

"The body cannot make or store Vitamin C so it needs to be eaten regularly," says Monique.

The dietitian says there are several fruits that offer Vitamin C.

"While oranges are renowned for being high in Vitamin C, did you know that pineapple, strawberries, mango, paw paw, broccoli, and Brussel sprouts have even more vitamin C?" reveals the dietitian.

Does vitamin C prevent flu and colds?

Many people believe that eating lemons and oranges in winter can help cure flu and colds because they have Vitamin C. How true is this?

Monique says this is just a misconception.

"It is a misconception that Vitamin C prevents us from getting sick," she says.

The dietitian says "rather, studies have shown that Vitamin C works by shortening the duration of a cold when you do get sick".
