Honour our four-legged heroes at the Purple Poppy Parade!
Updated | By East Coast Radio
Join the Purple Poppy Parade this Saturday in Durban for a heartwarming tribute, a dog display, and a lekker bring & braai!

Looking for something meaningful (and a little different) to do in Durban this May?
The South African Legion North Coast Branch invites you to their annual Purple Poppy Parade.
It’s a heartfelt tribute to the unsung heroes of war: our brave service animals.
When: Saturday, 17 May 2025
Time: 10:30 AM
Where: Queen Nandi Mounted Rifles (QNMR), 101 Isiah Ntshangase Road, Durban
You’ve probably heard about Remembrance Day with the red poppies.
Did you know there’s also a day to honour the animals who served alongside soldiers in wartime?
These incredible animals showed courage and loyalty on the front lines, from loyal dogs and sturdy horses to pigeons, donkeys, and even camels,
The Purple Poppy Parade is a moving ceremony featuring:
- A formal wreath-laying service
- A dog display on the parade ground
- A relaxed bring-and-braai afterwards! (Fires provided, cash bar available; you just bring your meat and good vibes.)

It’s a beautiful opportunity for families, animal lovers, history buffs, and anyone in Durban looking to do something meaningful and unique this month.
As Legionnaire Rupert Meyer puts it: “We may not all wear medals or uniforms, but honouring these silent veterans gives us a unique chance to reflect on the broader cost of war and to teach younger generations about courage and sacrifice in all its forms.”
So round up the family, grab your cooler box, and head down to QNMR this Saturday.
Pay your tribute, enjoy the displays, and raise a glass to the four-legged (and feathered) heroes history almost forgot.
