On 17 March 1919, a legend was born - Nat King Cole. The Grammy winner made a name for himself in the entertainment industry.

Nat King Cole once told his children: "I may be able to bring harmony among people with my music." And that is exactly what his music did for many of the people around the world. 

The late jazz star created many hits that continue to speak to the soul to this day. 

Nat was born in 1919 to parents Edward James Coles and Perlina Coles.

The legend released songs such as 'Sweet Lorraine', 'Too Young', 'Mona Lisa', and Mel Tormé's 'Christmas Song'.

Let's look at a few facts about the late star who died at the age of 45 on 15 February 1965 in Santa Monica, California, USA after suffering from lung cancer.

- His mother was his first music teacher. 

- Church played a huge role in his life. He started playing the piano at his father's church at the age of 12.

- Two years later, at age 14, he formed a 14-piece band called the Royal Dukes. 

- The award-winning artist got his name King after his publicist put a silver tin-foiled crown on his head and proclaimed him "King", reports IMDB.com. 

- His incredible gift led to him performing for  Queen Elizabeth II. 

- He married singer Maria Cole 1948, and the two of them had two daughters, Caroline and Natalie Cole. 

- He released his last album, 'L.O.V.E', two weeks before he died. 

- The singer was Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1993 and he was the winner of a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Grammy award in 1989.
