Madikizela-Mandela died in hospital in Johannesburg, yesterday. She was 81.

Her death comes days after the one year anniversary of the death of fellow struggle stalwart, Ahmed Kathrada.

"Mrs Mandela has really kept the struggle going. Her defiance, courage, commitment and her radicalism is what inspired thousands of young people to take up the struggle thereafter. She will be remembered as one of the people who stood out at the time when opposing apartheid was not the easiest of things to do in this country," the foundation’s director Neeshan Balton said.

The foundation has offered its condolences to the Madikizela and Mandela families.

Meanwhile - the Nelson Mandela Foundations says they are deeply saddened by the death of the icon, and Nelson Mandela's former wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

CEO of the foundation, Sello Hatang, says Winnie Mandela provided hope when there was no other.

"On behalf of the trustees and staff of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, we would like to convey our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mam' Winnie. Mam' Winnie was a struggle veteran who not only gave up her livelihood but was willing to give up her life in order to ensure that we have a different South Africa. May we all invest in ensuring that the future looks brighter than before," Hatang said.
